SIMM-PLY SUPER
The Giants, once considered one of the most cherished of all football teams, had been on a free fall since 1964. From that season through the '81 season, the team posted only two winning seasons and did not even once qualify for the playoffs. Not even a move into a brand new stadium in '76 could help the team. Things disintegrated even more in '78, when the team seemingly had the Eagles beat and only needed to run out the clock. For some inexplicable reason, the offense ran a play, a handoff in the closing seconds of the game, which was botched, picked up by the opportunist Eagle defense, and returned, for a game-winning touchdown. Having sunk to the lowest levels in team history, owner Wellington Mara hired George Young to reverse the Giants fortunes. In just two short years under Young’s leadership, the Giants were playoff bound, and the building blocks were in place for what would become a super season. Young drafted Phil Simms to quarterback his team, and he built a defense around an amazing group of linebackers, Harry Carson, Carl Banks and Lawrence Taylor. Suddenly, the Giants were again a ferocious team. Finally, in '86, everything would come together. Posting an amazing record of 14-2, the Giants would storm through the playoffs, en route to the team’s first championship game since 1963. In the big game against Denver, Simms was masterful. He completed an astounding 22 passes in 25 attempts, surging his team past Denver in the second half en route to a 39-20 rout. With Denver leading 10-9 in the third quarter, Simms marched his team on a 63 yard scoring drive that culminated with a 13 yard touchdown pass to inspirational tight end, Mark Bavaro. After snaring the ball in the end-zone, Bavaro knelt down on a knee, as if to be giving thanks to be part of this special moment. Later in the second half the game was put away as Simms connected with Phil McConkey on a six yard scoring play. Simms was named the games Most Valuable Player and his passing day is still considered the gold standard by which all championship quarterbacks are measured.
