BROADWAY GUARANTEE

“We’re going to win the game, I guarantee it!” With those words, Broadway Joe Namath set into motion one of the great upsets in the history of professional sports. It was January, 1969 and for the third time the two professional football leagues would be matched up in a one game playoff to decide football’s world champion. The game was officially called the “Third World Championship Game”. Namath, calling all his own plays, expertly moved his Jets up and down the field against the vaunted defense of the heavily-favored Baltimore Colts, chewing up the clock and positioning his team to score time and again. The opportunistic Jets defense intercepted four passes and recovered a fumble to stymie the potent Colt attack. Here we see the final play of the Jets first scoring drive. We’re early in the second quarter and Namath is about to hand the ball to Matt Snell, who ran for 121 yards on the day. Snell will break outside to his left and beat the Colt defenders into the end zone, capping an 80 yard scoring drive. The play gives the Jets an early 7-0 lead, and from there, the Jets simply pulled away to victory.
